Trinity are looking at and learning about the Chinese New Year.
Chinese New Year will begin on 23 January 2012 which marks the start of the Year of the Dragon. The year will be 4710 on the Chinese Calendar. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival.
All classes have been involved in a wide variety of cross curricular links during last week. On monday morning we had mixed age group activities, with the children supporting one another.
Our assembly on Monday afternoon included dragon dancing, ribbon dances and fan dancing. Children proudly talked about the Animal Race story and their Chinese zodiac signs as well as information about Chinese culture and traditions. Classes also displayed their chinese dragon puppets, animal collage pictures and chinese lanterns. We all had a wonderful celebration of this special festival and the children watched and listened carefully to one another.

Before half term Trinity children spent the week doing activities to help them learn about Divali.
‘A tast of India’ – everyone one had the chance to taste a variety of Indian foods. All the classes had a go at making some, and Saffron Cottage, (our local Indian restaurant in Ford) kindly donated a large selection of food for the children to try.

We also had a visit from Bonita King who told each class the story of Rama and Sita. She taught us Divali and Bollywood dances, where were performed with great enthusiasm! We learned about Hindu ceremonies. Classes make rangoli pattens, diva lights, mendi patterns, Divali cards and some dressed up in traditional costume.
Everyone had a great week!!
”Why did you decide to be a bishop? What is it like being a bishop? What does a bishop do each day? Were you a rebel at school?” These were just a few of the questions that the children at Trinity CE Primary School asked Bishop Alistair when he visited on 6th October.
Bishop Alistair joined Trinity pupils for their weekly “Open the Book” assembly (presented on this occasion by Val, Rose, Judy and Sue) before visiting pupils in their classes to chat about his role and answer questions.
Whilst the older children enjoyed finding out about Bishop Alistair’s family and hobbies (and in one class especially found the subsequent maths lesson rather tedious by comparison) the younger ones were filled with awe at his appearance when he put on his vestments; “it’s real gold!”, “he looks like a king!” and, as Bishop Alistair held his mitre upside down, “are they underpants?” were some of the overheard observations.
Without exception members of staff spoke highly of the Bishop’s warm approach and natural rapport with the children. Everyone was delighted that he found time to pay a visit to Trinity, especially as the school is the most northerly Church of England primary school in Hereford Diocese.
What is it? This is a brilliant yet simple opportunity for children and families to send gifts to youngsters who would otherwise never receive anything at Christmas.
Operation Christmas Child sends a message of hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and offering booklets of Bible stories.
It focuses on the true meaning of Christmas – Jesus Christ, God’s greatest gift.
In 2003 more that 6.5 million gift-filled shoe boxes were sent to some of the poorest boys and girls in the world in over 100 countries.
Take an average size shoe box, cover it in Christmas wrapping paper, fill it with things like with paper, pencils, toothbrush, toothpaste, toys, sweets etc – these are then collected, sorted and shipped to Eastern Europe.
Don’t forget – Shoeboxes need to be
returned to Trinity by14th November at the latest.

As part of our Local area studies…
On the 23rd of September, Class 5 visited Great Wollaston Farm. When we got there it was quite muddy, so we had to wear wellies.
The first thing we did was see the horses. He didn’t own any horses, but his daughter owned one and some people graze their horses there.
Just a little bit further on was the Wildlife area, where we saw a little frog, some spiders and lots and lots of beetles. When we actually got into the area we saw a lake, and an owl box made out of a barrel and some string. Eventually we reached a gate which led to the cows.
We looked at the calves. They looked SO cute! They were only 3 days old. We also saw the machine that milked the cows, Mr Kynaston said the milk then goes on to make cheese.
